Appalanche is smartphone application which makes everyone staying at an alpine resort potential avalanche rescuers through an easy to use application that uses the advanced technology available in today’s mobile phones.
The idea for Appalanche is the result of research and algorithm development at KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden, and the app itself has been developed by a European Research Council Proof of Concept project, “COREPOS”. The localization is done by utilizing the existing sensors in a phone along with its various possibilities for wireless communication. By using unique proprietary ad-hoc technology, the app can be used independently of the mobile network or other connection. If cellular networks are available, it can be used to automatically call for help and to summon more avalanche rescuers.
